Aloha! Tiki Hideaway celebrates its sixth birthday
Words by Luke Hudson
Those seeking to escape to an exotic paradise should look no further than the excellent Tiki Hideaway, who are now celebrating their sixth birthday as one of Leeds’ most unique bars.
As part of the festivities, bartenders from Mahiki – the popular London tiki bar – took over things for one night and treated guests to some of their best cocktails. They even whipped up a few Zombies: one of Tiki Hideaway’s signature drinks involving lots of fire and lots of rum.
Guests also went behind the bar and learned the tricks of the trade with a cocktail masterclass – where they made their own tasty Mai Tai.
Live music over the night put everyone in a tropical mood with a duo playing acoustic tracks in a surf rock style, and the Mahiki bartenders ensured that everyone was in good spirits.
The bars’ immersive décor includes everything from the traditional Tiki head statues to puffer fish light fittings. The owner, Phil Harrison, had the idea for a Tiki themed bar when he was travelling around small islands close to Hawaii. He was inspired by the culture and the people and wanted to bring a small piece of it to Leeds.
The birthday party kicks off the Leeds Loves Cocktails festival with other events running at various venues throughout the city. The mood at Tiki Hideaway is sure to be extra jubilant this week and there’s no better way to help them celebrate than with a refreshing cocktail… or two.
