It’s behind you: top theatre over Christmas and New Year
Words by Lauren Entwistle
Like turkey and trimmings and trees with tinsel, pantomimes and the theatre go hand-in-hand with the Festive Season. Leeds has a number of fantastic showings throughout December and January for all ages and tastes, with showings at venues across the city. If you fancy a slice of the action, here’s our guide to what’s on:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – WY Playhouse
CS Lewis’s sumptuously wintry classic is brought to life by Sally Cookson following her magically inventive Peter Pan at the National Theatre and the critically acclaimed sell-out tour of Jane Eyre.
Join Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter for the most mystical of adventures to a faraway land where it’s always winter, but never Christmas. Wave goodbye to wartime Britain and say hello to a talking faun, an unforgettable Lion and the coldest, cruellest white Witch with a magical production that has all the reviewers raving.
Catch it from 13th December 2017 to the 27th January 2018.
Jack and the Beanstalk – The Carriageworks
The Carriageworks Theatre is once again teaming up with one of the country’s leading pantomime producers, Paul Holman Associates, to present the much-loved story of Jack and the Beanstalk.
With a bag full of magic beans, colourful characters, creative costumes and a set straight out of a fairy tale book, Jack and the Beanstalk promises to raise the roof at Carriageworks Theatre with bucket-loads of laughter and the classic triumph of good over evil (of course.)
A perfect and traditional way to get the family together for Christmas, this pantomime runs until the 6th January.
Aladdin: The Rock n’ Roll Panto – The City Varieties
The City Varieties run of record-breaking of Rock’n’Roll Pantos continues with the highly anticipated adventures of Aladdin!
With a top cast of incredibly talented actor-musicians set to wow audiences in this high-octane panto, get ready to enjoy traditional elements (corny gags a-hoy!) teamed with a panoply of pop, rock and soul hits played live on stage! One for the music-lovers among us, this panto has a great mix of old and new tropes that will have everyone in the family laughing – so get ready to dance in the aisles and shout, “IT’S BEHIND YOU!”
Christmas Matinee – Leeds College of Music
With one week to go before Christmas, join Leeds College of Music as they take you on a journey back through the decades from the noughties to the fourties. Talented singers and instrumentalists of Leeds College of Music provide the entertainment alongside special guest narrator Laura Prior.
Prior will lead the audience, in true Doctor Who/Time Lord style, revisiting significant events, popular culture and Christmas traditions (not forgetting the most popular toy of the decade – who could forget Furby, Etch-a-Sketch and the Slinky?)
Kicking off on the 16th of December from 3pm, make sure to book tickets here so as to avoid disappointment.
