Rehearsals with Phoenix Dance Theatre
We’re extremely lucky in Leeds to be spoilt for choice with cultural offerings, from theatre productions to art exhibitions, music events and an amazing array of dance companies and troops.
One of the shining exampled of the success of dance within Leeds can be seen in Phoenix Dance theatre, founded in 1981 by Leeds locals David Hamilton (Artistic Director), Donald Edwards and Vilmore James. Their enthusiasm for dance was sparked by the experience and training they were exposed to at school.
The refreshing outlook on contemporary dance which these three took quickly built up a following for their project in Leeds as well as further afield and in 1987 came the first major expansion of Phoenix Dance Theatre with the employment of female dancers.
Fast forward to 2016 and Phoenix Dance Theatre are one of the stalwarts of the Leeds dance culture, nestled into their purpose built studio alongside Northern Ballet.
We had the pleasure of joining dancers of Phoenix Dance Theatre as they rehearsed for upcoming shows.
Here are some of the moments we captured.
