Up late at Kirkgate’s Night Market

Words by Lauren Entwistle

Everyone has been buzzing about the brand-new Night Markets, which will be cropping up significantly in the city’s winter calendar. Despite sounding like something you’d find in a Neil Gaiman book, the Night Markets are on every last Thursday of the month and have been listed and booked until January – so no worries if you missed it this time!

Set in the largest covered market in Europe, make no mistake that we think Kirkgate is special. But paying a visit after-hours is another experience entirely, with a wide variety of stalls, live music, and delicious food and drink open and bustling until 11pm. Visitors can sit and relax in the wide open event space, listen to some sweet jams and chow down on Kirkgate favourites from Manjit’s Kitchen, Bahn and Mee, Jenny’s Jerk Chicken, Grub and Grogs, Fat Annie’s and more – which firmly ticks any hunger boxes.

Once you’ve done with dinner, you’re free to wander around the numerous stalls and to grab a drink or something to take home. Gander at fresh fish (we’re also talking HUGE oysters) from Tarbett’s Fishmongers or grab some delicious stuffed olives from Queen Olives. There’s also a wide selection of bread from Bluebird Bakery, sauces from Red Hot Chilli Bees and good, wholesome vegetarian and vegan foods from Honest Edibles – you can tend to catch them hand-mixing and preparing their stuff right there.

Of course, you can still get some shopping in too. Browse colourful wares from Afriq Boutique, grab a bottle of cider from Udders Orchard Cider or beer from Little Black Dog to take home. There’s also a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables from Neil’s Greengrocers, picked straight from the garden. You can take your pick of cakes, bakes and more too.

If there’s one thing to schedule on your calendar this winter, it’s a visit to the Night Market at Kirkgate.
