Leeds makes a great base to explore this wonderful county, here are a few suggestions of things to do all within 30 minute drive or train ride from the city centre.
Bradford is a just a few miles away from Leeds, set in rolling hills and rugged moorland the city has a rich and vibrant cutural heritage. Explore UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire, spend time shopping, eating, drinking at Salt’s Mill and enjoy the David Hockney exhibition, admire the architiecture of Little Germany or feast your eyes on contemporary exhibitions at Cartwright Hall. The rich heritage of Bradford is brought to life in the many museums in the area including the Bradford Industrial Museum, and further afield the Brontë Parsonage and East Riddlesden Hall in Keighley.
The victorian spa town of Harrogate is just 15 miles from Leeds and boasts wonderful architecture and a fine array shops, restaurants and cafes – including the world-renowned Betty’s tearoom (also at York, Ilkley and Harlow Carr) and nearby RHS Harlow Carr Gardens.
Ilkley is situated on the outskirts of Leeds nestled next to the rugged beauty of Ilkley Moor. This charming town is full of great restaurants, drinking holes and shops as well as hosting numerous festivals and events.
Roam the historic street of York and discover York Minster, the largest medival cathedral in northern Europe, release your inner train spotter and explore the National Railway Museum or York Castle Museum and York Art Gallery, which is currently undergoing a major redevelopment and will reopen in 2015 with increased exhibition space, cafe and gallery gardens. Delve into the viking past with ineractive exhibits at Jorvik Viking Centre.
A trip to nearby Wakefield takes you to the heart of the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, home to The Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the birthplace of Dame Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
